Overview

Topical peptides represent one of the most evidence-backed categories in cosmetic science. Unlike many "anti-aging" ingredients, cosmetic peptides have clear mechanisms — Argireline and SNAP-8 inhibit neurotransmitter release at facial muscles (topical Botox alternative), Matrixyl and Syn-Coll stimulate collagen synthesis, GHK-Biotin promotes hair growth, and Zinc Thymulin regulates hair cycling. Many researchers formulate their own serums for maximum potency.

Argireline

Acetyl Hexapeptide-3, AH3

Mechanism

Inhibits SNAP-25 (part of the SNARE complex that releases acetylcholine at neuromuscular junctions). Reduces muscle contraction — a topical alternative to botulinum toxin.

Benefits

  • Reduced expression lines (forehead, crow's feet)
  • Non-invasive alternative to Botox
  • Cumulative effect with regular use
  • Well-tolerated by all skin types

Dosing

5–10% concentration in serum. Apply morning and evening.

Reconstitution

Available as water-soluble powder. Dissolve in distilled water, then add to serum formula.

Cycle Length

Continuous daily use.

Timing

Apply before moisturizer. Massage gently into target areas.

Stacks Well With

SNAP-8 (synergistic), Matrixyl, GHK-Cu

Cautions

Very safe topically. Avoid getting in eyes.

Matrixyl 3000

Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7 + Palmitoyl Oligopeptide

Mechanism

Combination of two matrikines that signal fibroblasts to increase collagen I, III, and IV synthesis. Also stimulates hyaluronic acid and fibronectin production.

Benefits

  • Increased collagen synthesis
  • Firmer, denser skin
  • Reduced deep wrinkle depth
  • Improved skin texture
  • Long-term structural improvement

Dosing

2–4% concentration in serum.

Reconstitution

Typically supplied as pre-dissolved solution. Add to serum at cool temperatures.

Cycle Length

Daily use, 3+ months for structural improvement.

Timing

PM serum or AM under SPF.

Stacks Well With

Argireline, GHK-Cu, Syn-Coll

Cautions

Extremely well tolerated. No significant adverse effects.

Zinc Thymulin

Thymulin zinc complex, FTS

Mechanism

Thymic peptide-zinc complex that regulates hair follicle cycling. Prolongs anagen (growth) phase and delays catagen (regression). Specific for hair follicle biology.

Benefits

  • Hair loss prevention
  • Increased hair growth rate
  • Extended anagen phase
  • Scalp skin health
  • Complements minoxidil

Dosing

0.1–0.25% in scalp serum. Apply daily to scalp.

Reconstitution

Dissolve in peptide-safe carrier. Zinc must be present for activity.

Cycle Length

Continuous use — stop using and hair cycling reverts.

Timing

Apply to clean, dry scalp. Do not rinse.

Stacks Well With

GHK-Cu (hair growth, but separate applications), Minoxidil

Cautions

Do not mix with GHK-Cu in the same formulation — they compete for zinc/copper binding. Alternate days or apply separately.
